For many, Akarua have been seen as one of the most exciting and fastest-improving names in New Zealand with the wines produced having received numerous accolades over the past couple of years. Their Pinot Noir releases in particular are starting to create a real buzz, with a spate of recent rave reviews. Akarua Pinot Noir is the producer’s flagship red wine, produced from a blend of individual vineyard blocks in the sub region of Bannockburn. A multi-award winning release, the 2011 has scoped a host of gold medals and trophies in domestic and international competitions and is currently drinking wonderfully well. A hauntingly aromatic nose reveals seductive, regional, aromas of dark fruit, spice and violet. The palate is beautifully poised, complex and shows excellent fruit weight supported by fine tannins. A slightly cooler year has produced a wine with a "burgundian framework" but a distinctly regional soul. Although delicious to drink now, this excellent wine will develop additional complexity over the next 3-5 years. Best enjoyed with dishes such as duck, roast chicken and pork.
