Based in the Central Otago area of New Zealand, Bell Hill is unanimously regarded as one of the country's very best producers, renowned in particular for their exceptional Pinot Noir releases. Founded by partners Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen, the goal of this project from the outset was to plant in limestone soil, which they were convinced allowed Burgundy wines to be made with structure, acidity and longevity.£10 per 100.00ml
A tiny operation producing only miniscule amounts since being established in 1997, Bell Hill has gone from strength to strength and has been awarded the prestigious rating of five stars, one of only three New Zealand wineries to gain this ranking. Only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is planted, and the wines, stylistically, are incredibly pure, understated and mineral driven. This release is typically impressive, offering a broad and haunting nose that combines vivid dark fruit, truffle, earth and violet. The palate is medium bodied and soft with a silky structure and wonderful complexity. Fresh, focused and bright with a medly of berry, cherry, mineral and earthy flavours. Whilst good to drink now this will also age supremely well. Best decanted and paired with game and duck.
