Often considered to be a new and exciting wine producing country, Croatia has actually been producing wines for the last 2,400 years when the first ancient Greeks settled on the Croatian Coast, and was already an area famed for wine and olive oil production by the Romans. The Cosseto family arrived in the late 1800s from Piedmont and have made wines in the region of Istria ever since. Now run by third generation family members, this winery is as determined as ever to showcase the terroir and soul of Croatia from both international grape varieties and local ones. Mozaik is a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and the Istrian grape borgona, and was matured in oak barrels for 15 months with a further five months ageing in bottle before being released. The wine is ruby red in colour with a heady sweet bouquet of wild flowers, woodland, oak spice and ripe berry fruit. Silky and feminine on the palate, this seductive blend reveals delicious layers of black cherry, blackcurrant, toasty oak, cloves and cinnamon which are held together by a ripe tannins and structured acidity. Long and flavoursome on the finish, this delicious red would make a wonderful introduction to Croatian wine and would pair superbly well with a range of pasta and red meat dishes.
