Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district in Western Australia. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker Robert Mondavi first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine, and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 'Art Series' Chardonnay in an international blind tasting. Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, Leeuwin Estate is now under the direction of two generations of the founding family. The 'Art Series' represents Leeuwin’s finest wines from each vintage. The winemakers have always selected the optimum fruit, transforming it into Leeuwin’s highest quality and age-worthy wines. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists, with each vintage featuring a different piece of work. Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2010 is a classic release from the estate which is a great wine to drink now or to cellar. A deceptively complex and incredibly youthful nose features initial aromas of cut pear, fresh quince and lemon blossom. A savoury line is also evident with sesame brittle, cinnamon stick, rice wafer and hints of cornmeal. On the palate, woven layers of intense white fleshed fruits, diligent oak handling and effortless texture meet seamlessly and are driven by a mineral saline acid spine. Pears, grapefruit and white nectarine are the key fruits of the palate, which is focused with remarkable length and possesses amazing longevity. Representing one of Australia’s most iconic wines, this stunning white would pair wonderfully well with a range of fish and chicken dishes.
