Established in 1776, Louis Roederer is one of the few remaining, completely independent, family owned, large Champagne houses. By 1876 the house had achieved such a reputation for quality that the second Louis Roederer was asked by Tsar Alexander II to create a new Champagne, Cristal, for the exclusive use of the Russian Tsars. As a result, the first, and perhaps ultimate, Cuvée de Prestige was born. Roederer Cristal is a Pinot Noir-Chardonnay blend that is only produced in the very best vintages with meticulous care taken, and painstaking attention to detail applied. 20% of the base wines are matured in large oak casks undergoing weekly batonnage, before spending five years ageing in the cellars and then rested for a further eight months post disgorgement. On the nose, the immediate aroma is highly expressive with suggestions of white fruit, sweet pollen and grapefruit which develop to more confit, lightly grilled toasty notes. In the mouth, Cristal is full and creamy, revealing a fine concentration of nectarine, fresh apricot and peach which have a silky, textured mid-palate quality before leading to a finish of sensational grace and length. An extravagant and luxurious Champagne to celebrate with, Cristal is also a hugely versatile wine to pair with food, matching particularly well with lobster, crayfish, mushrooms and even duck.
