Perticaia Sagrantino di Montefalco is the estate’s flagship wine and is made solely from the rare, exotic and highly regarded grape variety Sagrantino. Aged in barrel and bottle for 3 years before release, this 2006 release is currently drinking deliciously but will undoubtedly reward being further aged. Opaque and inky in complexion, a broad and developing range of aromas include blackberries, cherries, tar, leather, prune, cinnamon and cedar. Full bodied, structured and impressively intense, flavours of dried fruit, herbs, cedar and dark chocolate are revealed on a layered mid palate which follows through to a dry, grippy and tremendously long finish. Very much a food-friendly wine, this would pair well with pork chops, red meat with hearty sauces, stews, tomato sauce based pasta and mature cheeses.
Perticaia began as a retirement project for long time winemaker and consultant Guido Guardigli when it was established in 2000. However, with a dedication to quality and environmental sustainability (low yields, small production runs and 'old fashioned' organic farming techniques) Perticaia has begun to produce some of the best wines made in the Italian region of Umbria.
