Timo Mayer is a small producer of hand-crafted, single vineyard wines based in the Yarra Valley region of Australia. The philosophy of the winery is that wines are made in the vineyard, with as little interference as possible, and without fining or filtration. This particular wine is named after the vineyard, which is called Bloody Hill due to the effort it takes to walk up and down its steep slopes each day whilst working. Stylistically, this is a bright, fresh and youthful expression of Pinot Noir with an abundance of raspberry, cranberry and cherry on the nose, complemented by a whisper of spice and herbs. Medium-bodied and juicy in the mouth, flavours of red fruit again dominate with elegant tannins and lively acidity providing a perfect balance. Savoury notes of mineral and bay leaf creep in on the finish, which is long and linear. A charming and incredibly drinkable red, this would pair well with a range of poultry and pork dishes.
