Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, Vega Sicilia is today one of Spain’s greatest and most coveted wines. Based in the Ribera de Duero region, the wines produced are largely based on Spain’s signature grape Tinto Fino (clone of Tempranillo) but also use Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec which come from vine cuttings imported from Bordeaux over a century ago. A winner of countless accolades and competitions, Vega Sicilia founded its success on its meticulous production techniques, meticulous grape selection and a very lengthy ageing process which sees the wines mature in oak for many years before release. Three wines are produced by Vega Sicilia; Unico (the flagship release) followed by Reserva Especial (a non-vintage blend of top vintages) and Valbuena, which represents the entry-level wine. Produced from younger vines and aged for a shorter period in oak than Unico, Valbuena 1996 has matured beautifully and will continue to evolve and improve over the next 20 years and beyond. Garnet red in colour, a complex developing nose reveals notes of red cherry, plums, dried fruit, black olives, vanilla, marzipan and cedar. Velvety smooth and softly textured in the mouth, mellow flavours of almond, nutmeg, herbs and wild fruit are suggested, balanced by velvety tannins and lively acidity. A remarkable wine with incredible personality and interest, this would pair beautifully with a range of red meat dishes such as roast lamb or beef wellington.
