Château Calon-Ségur, the most northerly of Medoc’s classed growth estates, was acquired in the late 1600s by Marquis Nicolas de Ségur, famously known as the ‘prince of vines’ and the owner of Château Lafite and Château Latour. The heart motif on the label derives from his declaration ‘I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon’. The Château now consists of 74 hectares, and the vineyards are planted on up to five meter deep gravel beds mixed with sand, limestone and clay. This impressive release from 1995 has blossomed gracefully over time, and is on great form to drink now. Reserved and seductive in style, a subtle nose reveals notes of cedar, blackberry, clove, olive and woodland. Full-bodied on the palate with a silky smooth texture, this wine is focused and intense with a sublime balance and an intoxicating medley of flavour. A highly pleasurable wine to drink now or over the next 10 years, this would pair superbly well with simple red meat dishes.
