Château L'Evangile is one of the Pomerol’s oldest producers, dating back as far as 1741. It sits on a long strip of gravel on the south-eastern part of the appellation and is bordered by two illustrious neighbours in the form of Château Petrus, and Cheval Blanc. The Château was acquired in 1990 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild and in good vintages is one of Bordeaux’s most majestic and long-lived wines. Predominantly composed of the variety Merlot, a 25% addition of Cabernet Franc imparts structure and complexity to the wine, which is aged in French oak for 18 months before release. Château L'Evangile 1990 is a classic release from a superb vintage that has been maturing exquisitely well. Mellow, fragrant and refined on the nose, this wine displays a myriad of complex aromas which include cedar, blackcurrant, plums, basil, herbs and balsamic – to name but a few. Silky smooth, seamlessly balanced and effortlessly integrated, the palate is broadly flavoured with great depth and intensity. Long and harmonious on the finish, whilst mature and developed, this wine will continue to drink well over the next decade and beyond. A splendid wine for a special occasion, it's best paired with simple roasted red meat dishes.
