Founded in 1859, Gaja represents a revolutionary force in Italian winemaking and is justifiably ranked amongst the world’s very greatest producers. Famous for producing exquisite Barolos and Barberesco wines from the Piemonte area of Italy, Gaja was a pioneer in the production of single-vineyard releases and modern winemaking techniques which effectively put his native region on the wine map. Given such honours as ‘the undisputed king of Barbaresco’ and ‘the man who dragged Piedmont into the modern world’, Gaja has acquired an iconic status, and the wines are some of the world’s most coveted releases. Dagromis is a recent introduction to the Gaja range and represents a blend of grapes from different vineyards in the Barolo region. Aged for 24 months in oak before being bottled, this is a classic example of a Barolo and a great introduction to the wines of Gaja. Perfumed, intense and lifted on the nose, this impressive wine displays notes of violet, tar, damson and sandalwood whilst on the palate it is powerful and dense with a forward dark fruit profile set against notes of pepper, back cherry, leather and liquorice. Finishing long and complex on the palate, this would make a fine match with red meat dishes.
