Wine has been Hiroyuki Kusuda’s greatest passion since he was a teenager. He toured through Europe visiting famous chateaux and wineries when he was studying law in Japan, and in 1996, Hiro went to Germany to learn the language and then started studying Oenology and Viticulture at Geisenheim University in 1997. An experiment for his thesis was carried out in New Zealand, for which the host winery was Schubert Wines. After graduating from Geisenheim Hiro and his young family headed straight to New Zealand and applied for residency. Residency was granted very quickly and the lease for a vineyard soon followed, and Hiro never looked back!
2012 was one of the coolest years in Martinborough’s history and only with extreme thinning could the Syrah ripen in time. The grapes were hand-picked with rigorous and careful selection, and hand-sorted with extreme precision. 100% destemmed, cold soaked for approximately 5-6 days without crushing. Fermented in open stainless steel vats and aged in French oak barriques for 20 months, the wine was unfined and bottled after coarse filtration.£9.2 per 100.00ml
