Lagavulin distillery was founded in 1816, and the rich, smoky and elegant whiskies produced are a firm favourite of connoisseurs and collectors. Boasting an unmistakably Islay style, Lagavulin is the most heavily-peated of the southern Islay malts and is matured exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels, accentuating its uncompromising smoky, salty character. This special edition was bottled in 2016 and represents a special one-off release to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the distillery being open. Soft and clean on the nose, with aromas of milk chocolate and lemon, along with fragrant tea-scented smoke alongside nose-drying, maritime aromas, with subtle cereal overtones. The palate is smooth yet magnificently full, with notes of chocolate, mint, smoke, salt and cereal. Highly limited, and here for a short time only, this should prove to be a highly sought after and very collectable bottling from this illustrious distillery.
