The Bodegas López de Heredia 1995 Vina Bosconia Gran Reserva has an alluring leather, dried orange peel and strawberry leaf scented bouquet that blossoms beautifully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, elegant tannins. It is both precise and exquisitely defined with hints of cured meat and leather towards the graceful finish. Bodegas López de Heredia was founded in 1877 and remains one of the most resolutely traditional and highly regarded producers in the region of Rioja. The wines from this estate are only produced in exceptional years and go through extensive oak and bottle maturation before being released. A blend of Tempranillo (80%), Garnacho (15%), Mazuelo and Graciano, this wine beautifully combines developing savoury characteristics with fleshy sweet fruit and a silky, seductive texture. Extremely complex on the nose, this wine displays a broad range of aromas which include red cherries, plums, tobacco, rose petal, Chinese Five Spice and leather. Medium weight, intense, velvety and perfectly balanced in the mouth, this wine has a classic quality and oak influenced style that is unmistakably Rioja. Although immensely gratifying to drink now, this wine will also age remarkably well. A heavenly match with roast lamb or similar red meat dishes.
