In 1693 the German immigrant Henning Husing found the Meerlust estate and immediately recognised its great beauty and potential. With the manor house sitting on a granite outcrop only five km from False bay, the estate was named Meerlust, meaning ‘’pleasure of the sea’’. Since 1756, and for eight generations, making wines on the Meerlust Estate has been the family tradition for the Myburghs. Meerlust Chardonnay is sourced from two vineyards on the estate, the first planted in 1991 situated on alluvial dundee soils which provides the rich textured mouth feel and minerality. The younger vineyard was planted in 2007 on cartref soils and gives the wine a greater fruit expression. Complex and appealing on the nose with aromas of quince, citrus and floral notes which develop into lemon cream, oatmeal and marzipan. On the palate the wine is full bodied and generous, but impeccably balanced by crisp acidity. The ripe tropical fruit and creaminess is balanced by a pure minerality; typical of the chardonnay grape. Beautifully presented in its own branded gift tin, this makes a perfect gift for new world wine lovers. Best enjoyed with grilled fish and white meat.
