La Providencia has previously featured in Origin blends but this year comes to the fore as a single origin. La Providencia spans 64 hectares in the north of Guatemala near the border with Mexico. The climate and soil in the area fosters a cup that is traditionally Guatemalan, but usually associated with Guatemala’s far more famous southern region, Antigua; sweet and clean with a captivating acidity.
This lot from La Providencia is a mix of two different varietals, the Caturra and Catuai. Both varietals add different nuances and flavours to the final cup. The difficult to grow and low yielding Caturra is 35% of the lot and is known to be high in complexity, with a vibrant acidity. Caturra is known the coffee world over as a delicious plant that creates a unique coffee. The Catuai represents the rest of the lot and is much easier to grow being hardier and more disease resistant. It softens the acidity and adds the deep sweetness. The resulting cup has a medium and buttery body with a long, coating finish. Expect flavour notes of honey, berries and rich caramel.
