Hailing from the South West region of France, Pineau des Charentes is a classic French aperitif made from wine and Cognac. Produced from local grape varieties Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc and Colombard, the wine is fortified with brandy before being aged for two years in barrel. This excellent example from Société Puy Gaudin benefits from using only the best quality grapes and brandy, and displays an exquisite balance of sweetness and acidity. Deep gold in colour, on the nose aromas of fig, honey and spice are suggested, whilst the palate is mildly sweet, softly textured, attractively fruity and discreetly complex. A delicious aperitif to serve slightly chilled before a meal, Pineau des Charentes is also becoming increasingly popular as a cocktail component.
