Working vintages in France, Germany and New Zealand fed Stellenbosch University-trained wine maker Donovan Rall's enthusiasm, but one vintage with local cult winemaker Eben Sadie was pivotal. The intention for his own range "never more than 1000 cases tops" is to be utterly unique. With 5 Stars from the influential Platter’s Guide for his maiden 2008 white blend and for the 2009, Donovan is one of the new dynamic winemakers of recent times. Rall’s white is an unconventional blend of 33% Chenin Blanc, 33% Chardonnay, 17% Viognier and 17% Verdelho that is produced from hand-picked grapes and fermented and matured in French oak barriques in 12 months. The resulting wine is certainly worthy of the hype and effort involved in producing it, resembling a fascinating fusion between old and new world wine styles. Generously scented with aromas that suggest peach, pear, honey, cedar, hawthorn and mineral. It is balanced with a generosity of flavour and alcohol and a complexity that reflects the different varieties and vineyards that are used to produce it. A fantastic wine that comprehensively demonstrates why South African whites are currently creating such a buzz. Try with weighty fish, pork or poultry dishes for best food matches.
