Paul Draper was appointed winemaker at Ridge Vineyards in 1969, never formally trained in neither vine growing nor winemaking, Paul always had a strong belief in the importance of terroir and a passion for the European way of making wine. Today Paul is one of the best-known and highest regarded winemakers in the world and was named ‘Winemaker’s Winemaker’ by the Institute of Masters of Wine in 2013. Lytton Springs was first made in 1972 and until today the concept of the wine remains very much the same, consisting of a natural field-blend from vineyards mainly planted to Zinfandel and its principal complementary varietals; Petite Sirah, Carignan and Mataro. The 2012 Lytton Springs is filled with aromas of ripe blackberry, pepper, liquorice and a hint of vanilla. The palate is generous and concentrated of plum and black cherry fruit with supple tannins, balanced acidity and a hint of minerality. The finish is long and layered with notes of ripe fig and dried herbs.
