Arguably Italy's most famous and collectable wine, Tenuta San Guido's Sassicaia has an iconic reputation built on incredible longevity and exceptional quality. The name Sassicaia translates as 'the place of many stones', and refers to the region's gravel rich soil, similar to that found in areas of Bordeaux which were an inspiration for the creation of this wine. Composed of a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the first release of Sassicaia was released in 1971 and was greeted with immediate acclaim. Since then this 'Super Tuscan' wine has gone from strength to strength and is always in high demand. Although the 2010 'Super Tuscans' were released to overwhelming critical acclaim, 2011 has produced a vintage that is in many cases just as fine. This is particularly evident in Sassicaia's superb 2011, which is a typically excellent release with an abundance of nobility and complexity. Dark and brooding on the nose, this wine displays expressive notes of black berries, violets, clove, tobacco and a hint of wood smoke. The palate is concentrated and complex, with great depth and concentration. Floral and spicy overtones compliment the sweet rich core of fruit flavours which are framed by masculine tannins and mouth-watering acidity. Reined in, taut and elegant, this is a wine built for the long haul; it needs a lot time to unwind, but also shows a great deal of potential.
