Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, Vega Sicilia is today one of Spain’s greatest and most coveted wines. Based in the Ribera de Duero region, the wines produced are largely based on Spain’s signature grape Tinto Fino (clone of Tempranillo) but also use Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec which come from vine cuttings imported from Bordeaux over a century ago. A winner of countless accolades and competitions, Vega Sicilia founded its success on its meticulous production techniques, meticulous grape selection and a very lengthy ageing process which sees the wines mature in oak for many years before release. Valbuena represents the estate’s entry-level wine, produced from younger vines, averaging 25 years, this wine was aged for five years in oak upon its release. Garnet red in colour, a complex developing nose reveals notes of damsons, plums and some floral notes of violets. Velvety smooth and softly textured in the mouth, the palate is bursting with flavours of tobacco, cedar, black fruits and pepper being underpinned by a vibrant acidity. A wine which will pair beautifull with a range of red meat dishes such as roast lamb or beef wellington.
