Established in the appellation of Santenay in 1980, Vincent Girardin is today regarded as one of Burgundy’s most progressive and best value for money producers. Boasting a broad and varied portfolio from all over the Burgundy region, Girardin both own vineyards and buys in fruit from other growers to produce his wines. Modern production techniques combined with a minimal intervention, organic approach, result in wines which are stylish, consistent and flavoursome, yet always reflective of terroir. This Vielles Vignes (or ‘old vine’) village level Puligny-Montrachet is produced from low-yielding Chardonnay vines averaging 65 years old. The grapes for this wine are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted, resulting in only the best fruit being used. The wine is aged in oak (only 15% of which is new) and aged on fine lees 14 months prior to bottling to impart texture, intensity and complexity. A powerful nose displays aromas of hazelnut, butter, stone fruit and mineral overtones, whilst the palate is full-bodied and rich with superb harmony, depth and length. A brilliant example of Puligny which over-delivers for the price. Best enjoyed over the next five years, pair this with a rich fish dish or creamy sauce based dishes.
