In their 40 years of production, Capannelle has established itself as one of the true icons of modern Italian wine names. Based in the heart of the Chianti area, Capannelle has been instrumental in putting Tuscan wines on the map, adopting an iconoclastic approach to winemaking which has seen the introduction of new oak to the cellars and international varieties to the vineyards. Although this represents only the producer’s entry level expression, this outstanding release should not be overlooked. Cellar matured and shipped over exclusively, this fantastic release from the monumental 1997 vintage is drinking perfectly, having benefitted greatly from ideal harvest conditions and extra time in bottle. Mellow, silky and complex, this Sangiovese based blend has softened and gained complexity, developing an enticing assortment of secondary nuances which include notes of cedar, leather, rosehip, nutmeg and dark fruits. Smooth, rich and powerful in the mouth, there is a perfect harmony and integration to this multi-faceted wine. Presenting a wonderful opportunity to try one of the greatest Italian vintages on record, Capannelle VdT 97 offers comparatively excellent value for money when compared against more expensive “super-Tuscan” expressions and is a real treat to drink with or without food.
