The talented Mary Katrantzou has been announced as the first designer to join the British Fashion Council’s prestigious NEWGEN committee.
NEWGEN was started in 1993 as a scheme aiming to provide support and offer exposure to emerging fashion talent. Past winners have included Alexander McQueen, Lara Bohinc, Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Christopher Raeburn, Roksanda Ilincic, and Erdem, who have all gone on to enjoy great success.
Mary herself was granted sponsorship from the initiative for six seasons from 2009 to 2011, allowing her to achieve an enviable status within the fashion industry. Her designs proved a big hit on the red carpet, and famous fans of the Greek designer include Keira Knightley, Olivia Wilde, Saoirse Ronan and Naomie Harris.
Now as a member of the board, Katrantzou will attend mentoring groups, one-on-one workshops and focused seminars to help decide which labels will be showcased for Autumn/Winter 2014.
Sarah Mower, BFC ambassador for emerging talent and chair of the NEWGEN selection committee, described the designer as “our ideal poster-girl for how much an original talent can achieve through the scheme… she will add the invaluable perspective of someone who knows exactly what it’s like, and what it takes, to be a young entrepreneurial designer.”
Katrantzou gushed “I could not have managed to get where I am today without the support of the BFC and the NEWGEN scheme.”
