The New Silhouette
You can detect a wind of change blowing through fashion this Spring as femininity really asserts its self again. Nowhere is this more evident than in the silhouette that seems to be defining the season. It's all about the skirt shape (and the nipped in waist that makes that shape look so good). The skirt is full and voluminous, taking in everything from large dirndl proportions to prom dress styles to shorter (in some cases very short) flippy skating skirts.
There's even a whiff of Dior's new look about Donna Karan's Spring collection. That cinched in waist and beautifully proportioned tulle hemmed skirt, loaded with metres of fabric are pure Grace Kelly.
Giles' collection is one of the prettiest, his best yet in many opinions. At the show the models stepped out like woodland fairies, many with headpieces and dresses embellished with feather-light leaves. And there was that silhouette again, in various guises, but in this dress the silk skirt is neatly pleated and slips out from under the bust and a belt of leaves.
The Miu Miu interpretation is short and sweet. Miuccia Prada's skirts and dresses have a cheeky, French maid feel about them. Flippy and full but with a very high hemline, these tiny tutu shapes are worn over more fitted mini's or short shorts for a cute and youthful look.
