A graduate from the famous Parsons School of Design in New York, Derek Lam has worked in the industry for over 12 years most notably as Vice President of Michael Kors. His first independent collection won him a nomination for the Perry Ellis award.

Taking inspiration from the torrid affair Helmut Newton had in Singapore with Josette, an older Belgian woman, just before World War II, Derek Lam's collection for Spring 2005 was outstanding: tea dresses, soft blouses that either ruffle or tie at the neck and slim pencil skirts.  Also beautiful were his delicate evening gowns in chocolate and violet.
