Clean lines and enormous windows make it feel as if you are floating above the Manchester skyline at this in-store restaurant. The floor is dramatic black marble, while in contrast the tables are set with crisp white linen, accentuating the modish uptown ambience. The compact menu is a modern British affair, pork and black pudding faggot with Puy lentils and apple appears alongside rare yellowfin tuna nicoise salad for starters, while main courses could be something classical like skate wing with buerre noisette, capers and new potatoes or 'three styles of beef' (fillet, braised oxtail and poached tongue). Vegetarian options might include gorgonzola and globe artichoke risotto. Those with a sweet tooth are well catered for with roasted pineapple, coconut sorbet and lime syrup or banana tart tartin. The wine list is a hefty and far-reaching tone arranged by country and style. House selections start at reasonable £13.50. |

Although all Harvey Nicks restaurants and Foodmarkets follow the same pattern, somehow they never seem formulaic. In Manchester, chef Alison Seagrave now wears the whites. The second-floor brasserie does brisker business than the restaurant, but the restaurant - black granite flooring, orange 'pin cushion' detailing on the bar - still feels fresh and is popular with businessmen and footballers wives. And if you live or work around here, the food market is a boon in a city centre still devoid of good fruit and veg. |

This stylish contemporary restaurant shares the second floor of the designer department store with an interesting food hall and a more relaxed bar/brasserie. The black and white colour scheme makes a bold statement and the floor to ceiling plate glass windows offer views over the trendy Exchange Square. The modern menu has classic ingredients like terrine of ham hock, parsley and sweet garlic, combined with European influences like French-style braised rabbit leg, Meaux mustard and tarragon. The wine list has global coverage and the added benefit that you can buy the wines in the food hall. Notable Wine List: A most comprehensive wine list, full of quality in every area. |
