The Bold Shoulder
Emphasis on the shoulder line has been growing in importance over the past couple of seasons and this Spring's show stopping collection by Christophe Decarnin for Balmain cemented it as a key silhouette trend. His pagoda shoulder jackets were seen on the likes of red carpet A-Listers from Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyoncé to Jennifer Garner.
For Autumn, the bold shoulder, not sighted since its 80s heyday is literally huge. From Dynasty boxy, as seen at Nina Ricci to Sci-Fi futuristic seen at Balmain and Givenchy, shoulders have become a key focus for designers across the board. Stella McCartney and Balenciaga showed Edwardian inspired leg of mutton sleeves with the volume at the shoulder cinching at the wrist, whilst Dries Van Noten, Donna Karan and Alexander Wang paid homage to the Power Dressing of 80s Yuppies with oversized, padded or dropped shoulders. But, be they padded, puffed, capped, extended or pointed, the bold shoulder is one way to show your fashion credentials this autumn.
