With a rating of ‘outstanding’ from the International Wine & Spirit Competition a score of 5/5 from Difford’s Guide for Discerning Drinkers and inclusion within Ian Buxton’s ‘101 Gins to Try Before You Die’ this is probably a gin you need to be all over.

58 Gin’s London Dry has been distilled very slowly and at the lowest possible temperature to maintain all the aromatics of the juniper coriander angelica orris root cubeb pepper lemon pink grapefruit bergamot and vanilla. With wonderful citrus notes peppery pine from the juniper and a creamy sweetness imparted by the vanilla as the wings on the label suggest when you open this little angel it’s going to fly. It makes a sensational Aviation and a refreshing G&T but we can’t get enough of its ‘signature serve’ the Archway Sour. To create it shake 50ml of London Dry with 50ml of pink grapefruit juice 15ml of lemon juice 15ml of vanilla sugar 10ml of Campari 25ml of aquafaba (to foam) and ice. Once you’ve made one you’ll want another 57.

The home of 58 Gin lies deep in a railway arch in Haggerston East London lit by the warm glow of copper. Entering the vast brick vault with its gleaming Arnold Holstein still at the centre feels like stumbling into a place of worship. The deity here is juniper and the service is being led by a small team – who bring a wealth of experience at the likes of Rebel Rabbit and Victory – that is demystifying distilling producing cracking gins with a sustainable ethos and building a solid local community. That’s why 58 Gin turned its stills over to creating hand sanitiser for the NHS key workers care homes and hospices during the Covid-19 pandemic; why they run a gin school; why they use foraged sloe berries and apples that would have gone to waste because they were deemed to wonky for the supermarket; why they work closely with suppliers like Loddington Farm in Kent (who engage in ‘regenerative farming’ methods); why they offset their carbon footprint by planting juniper bushes; why they use recycled glass for their bottles; and why their original label was designed by Mo Coppoletta the founder of one of London’s most famous tattoo parlours The Family Business.

According to SpongeBob SquarePants’ best friend Patrick Star “58 is like the luckiest number ever”. But there’s no luck involved here; 58 Gin is the product of hard graft from one of the most thoughtful brands working in the industry today.
