91 points “A white not a rosé as it doesn't spend any time on skins but the pressing give a pale onion-skin hue. This second vintage – a step up from 2019 – shows layered musky apricot jasmine pear melon and orange blossom characters with crisp acidity and a smooth lemon parfait finish.” – Decanter
The previous vintage of Akitu’s Pinot Noir Blanc was featured in Decanter’s Wines of the Year 2020. This latest vintage has been rated even more highly so get it while you can.
Some wines just blow you away. They just come at you out of leftfield and taste like nothing you’ve ever had before. That’s exactly what this wine from Akitu did to us. Writing for Spectator Life Jonathan Ray said about Akitu’s Pinot Noir Blanc:
“So this is nothing if not quirky and rare a still white wine from New Zealand made entirely from Pinot Noir… gosh it’s utterly completely beguiling. Akitu is one of Central Otago’s finest Pinot Noir producers as anyone who’s tried their A1 and A2 expressions will know.”
This ghostly bottle contains a white wine made using red grapes. The result is a blushing Pinot Noir Blanc 2020 that creates a bridge between white and rosé – maybe the perfect summer wine. Red berry sorbet white peach crisp Pink Lady apples melon a hint of Rainier cherry dried herbs beach pebbles floral perfume and a yeasty spiciness that reminds us of making stollen at Christmas. Crisp and textured; it’s a whole new drinking experience and this season’s most exciting release once again.
Akitu means summit in Maori a rather fitting name for a winery right at the pinnacle of Pinot Noir and one that’s located at 380 metres above sea level. And this latest creation takes Central Otago to new heights. Andrew Donaldson started planting the 12 hectares of vines for Akitu in the early 2000s. The first vintage came ten years later to enormous critical acclaim. And we think that his dedicated team of Steve Blackmore and PJ Charteris have created one of our favourite wines of the year so far.
