93 points, “The 2018 Cantariña 5 Valdeobispo is also classified as Vino de Paraje as it was produced with grapes from the lieu-dit that names it in Villafranca del Castillo. It’s a rather unusually dark, almost opaque and explosive Mencía from centenary vines that I could swear was a just-fermented Touriga Nacional with its intoxicating nose of violets and round, lush palate with 14% alcohol, melting tannins and a somewhat decadent personality.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Cantariña 5 Valdeobispo Mencía 2018 is one of our finds of the year. It’s a hidden gem of the highest order.

As the name suggest, it comes from the Valdeobispo vineyard in Villafranca del Bierzo. The plot measures just five hectares, of which only the bottom half is Mencía. Those old vines were planted in 1910, and they create a rich and dark expression of this much-loved grape variety. Matured in French oak for 12 months, it pulses with hedgerow blackberry, raspberry, cherry, plum, delicate spice and some stalkiness and herbaceousness reminiscent of mint and wildflowers. We’re going to fill the wine rack with this and break it out for barbeque season. If you’d like to do the same, be quick because this wine is rare. Only around 4,000 bottles were filled, and we managed to secure just a couple of cases. So, don’t miss out.

Cantariña is a small winery in Bierzo, Spain. Only a few dusty bottles and two incredible vineyards in León – Los Pinos and Valdeobispo – remained of the family business when the five siblings decided to do something about it. Now this artisan and organic producer is back, making the kind of honest salt-of-the-earth wines that are rarely seen outside of their region of origin.
