Only introduced in 2020 Angostura Cocoa Bitters are simply delicious. Made with Trinitario cocoa from Trinidad and Tobago it’s rich bitter and floral with a boldly nutty cocoa note plus flavours of cacao nibs ginger cake and dried herbs. Go heavy with this to build complexity in cocktails with a base of dark or heavily aged spirits. Having said that we love it in a Martinez made with Mezcal so maybe it’s just best to experiment. Why not add a slug to your next Mexican mole?
The original Angostura Bitters were invented by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert a German surgeon general in Simón Bolívar's army in Venezuela. Based in Angostura he used local ingredients that remain a well-kept secret to this very day. It will always be an iconic cocktail component instantly recognisable by its massively oversized label which was apparently a comedic error when Siegert’s sons separately designed a new label and new bottle without consulting each other on size.
