As the name implies, this new release from Ardberg showcases the heavy vapours which should have made it into the spirit due to the absence of the use of Ardberg's purifier. At Ardberg, the purifier is used to catch vapours that rise up the still, which sits on the lyne arm of the spirit still. It captures heavier compounds and condenses them, causing them to fall back into the still. The vapours which have fallen back then continue to be heated again and so rise again. This purifying process gives the whisky its well-known balanced, light floral and fruity characteristics which balance out the powerful peat, so by removing it, the results are more robust and heavier with dramatic and aromatic pungency.
The intense and aromatic scents lash at you like hail in a rainstorm with beach bonfire smoke, dark chocolate and smoked artichoke rising up to hit the senses along with the steady undercurrent of peat at the base. Taking a gentle sip, a more complex array of flavours come into focus including cardamom, peppermint, coffee, menthol and dark chocolate creating a relaxed fog like haze over the usual fruit and floral notes found in an Ardberg. The smouldering and earthy notes of peat can be found through the ash-like dust and envelops you in a long lingering and bold finish.
This pale, no age statement single malt has been bottled without filtration at 46% ABV. Ardberg fans will find something very different here with the disruption of its usual balanced whisky, but in experimenting and reimagining the classic, the team have hit upon something truly captivating.
