Ardnamurchan AD/07.21:05 is a highly anticipated and limited-edition release from a distillery at the vanguard of a bright new future for Scotch.
This distillery was opened on the remote Ardnamurchan (pronounced “ard-na-murkan”) peninsula by the independent bottler Adelphi which obviously piqued the interest of all serious Scotch connoisseurs. Adelphi is Scotland’s most acclaimed bottler of rare and limited-edition Single Malt whisky. Their whiskies are both incredibly scarce and much sought-after – so much so that on average Adelphi only accepts a mere 4% of barrels that are offered. So when they start making their own whisky they have high standards to maintain and that makes them an intriguing prospect.
Barley is grown on the estate of one of Ardnamurchan’s owners their power is drawn from a hydroelectric generator in the river hot water comes from a biomass boiler draff is fed to local cows pot ale is used as fertiliser and they are one of the first spirit companies to use blockchain technology. The latter is usually associated with cryptocurrency like Bitcoin but Ardnamurchan use it so that the consumer can track the provenance of their purchase from the field to the bottle.
AD/07.21:05 is crafted using a mixture of peated and unpeated spirit and it has been matured in 65% ex-Bourbon and 35% ex-Sherry casks. Living up to the hype and the talents at Adelphi it opens with a nose of crème brûlée topping charred oak herbs fishing villages (think rigging kippers seaweed and sea spray) vintage marmalade lemongrass spearmint and home-toasted granola. The palate is a chewy combination of caramelised nuts salted peanuts flambéed banana peaches orange zest honey and campfires on the beach. Ardnamurchan is one of Scotland’s most exciting distilleries with previous releases selling out rapidly. This one is sure to follow suit.
