Adi Badenhorst is one of South Africa’s most exciting winemakers and has been a pivotal player in the ‘Swartland Revolution’ which has propelled this once neglected wine growing region into the limelight. Adopting a dynamic and experimental approach the wines of Badenhorst are made using old-vine fruit from long established vineyards and vinified using traditional and non-interventionist methods.
Badenhorst Family Red is a blend of Shiraz Cinsault Tinta Barroca Grenache and Mourvèdre and was fermented in concrete and wood containers prior to being aged in used 4000-litre wooden casks for a period of 16 months. A big and full wine the 2011 is wonderfully lush and textured with aromas of sweet strawberry black cherries lavender and liquorice. And it’s evolving and maturing sensationally in this magnum.
Consider pairing with beef lamb venison Sunday roasts veggie haggis slow-cooked stews and anything doused in gravy.
