94 points “This is a reserved focused dusty red with very little oak influence understated grip and concentration brooding minerality and plum and red cherry fruit.” – Tim Atkin MW

Raaigras Grenache is the rarest of the rare. Always awarded huge scores by the critics this elegant red wine comes from what is probably the oldest Grenache vineyard in South Africa containing just a dozen rows of vines.

Expect wild strawberry cherry dried cranberries worn leather forest floor garden herbs mint lavender rose clove and a unique minerality. And don’t expect to find a better Grenache from South Africa than this.

Serve alongside slow-cooked stews such as goulash tagine or something a little more ‘French bistro’ style. Alternatively think game roasted aubergine duck pancakes Sunday roast with lots of parsnips barbequed pork or a whole cauliflower smothered in harissa and roasted.

Adi Badenhorst is one of South Africa’s most exciting hirsute and funny winemakers and has been a pivotal player in the ‘Swartland Revolution’ which has propelled this once neglected grape-growing region into the limelight. After honing his skills in the Rhône Valley (which plays a huge influence in his wines) New Zealand and at Rustenberg he bought a rundown winery and a clutch of gnarled vines and went it alone. Adopting a dynamic and experimental approach the wines of Badenhorst are made using old-vine fruit from long established vineyards and vinified using traditional and non-interventionist methods. Adi jokes that the most expensive piece of kit in his winery is the coffee machine. His wines are all vegan friendly.
