If you visit this beautiful Portuguese island and ask the locals which Madeira they drink the answer is a resounding “Vinhos Barbeito”. And this is one of Barbeito’s most popular drops…

The medium dry Rainwater Reserva (nobody can quite agree on why this style is called ‘Rainwater’) is made from 80% Tinta Negra and 20% Verdelho aged for five years using the Canteiro method which is the most expensive way of making Madeira reserved for only the very best wines. Casks are placed into the hot attics of warehouses to essentially cook a little. This imparts the caramelised nut and mince pie fruit notes to the wine and makes it virtually indestructible by this we mean that once opened it will not fade or turn sour over time like the majority of wines. This makes it a great one to dip into from time to time or to keep in the house to add a slug to whatever delights you are cooking up. With its sweetness perfectly balanced by a refreshing acidity this can be enjoyed at around 11-12°C with cheese salted snacks mince pies Christmas cake or chocolate desserts. It can even be mixed into the most exquisite cocktails.

Many of the grapes are harvested just along the coast from a beautiful fishing village called Câmara de Lobos frequented and painted many times by Winston Churchill. The island of Madeira is equal parts a marvel of engineering an enormous botanical garden and a hidden treasure for wine connoisseurs if you haven’t visited consider doing so over a glass of this.
