This chunky multi-vintage blend from Sonoma is a juicy slice of Californian sunshine that’s screaming out for a burger. Just don’t tell the Master of Wine who makes it that we said that.
The Whole Shebang is one of our favourite barbeque reds. Made by the Bedrock Wine Co. it’s a great-value blend made in solera using Zinfandel Carignan Syrah Petite Sirah Mataro and other Mediterranean varieties. Think of it as an American take on Côtes du Rhône. Expect damson raspberry prune fig blackberry chocolate and a thoroughly good time.
Bedrock may not be a household name but it really should be. Started in 2007 by owner and winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson MW (who is the son of the legendary Joel Peterson who founded Ravenswood Winery) and later joined by his business partner Chris Cottrell this winery in Sonoma is producing some of the most exciting wines currently coming out of USA. Morgan began his operation in a converted chicken coop in a friend’s backyard taking the idea of “garage wine” to a whole new level. Focusing on old vines (so expect big concentration and full-on flavour) Bedrock source grapes from their own vineyards and other throughout California (including some really interesting and lesser-known areas like Contra Costa County AVA Amador County AVA and Cienega Valley AVA). Over the years Morgan has forged some extraordinary relationships giving him access to some of the highest quality vineyards that California has to offer but also allowing him to supply grapes to some of the wine world’s biggest names. For example Bedrock buys Zinfandel from the renowned Pagani Ranch and sell fruit to Ridge Vineyards. This is an outfit that’s really in the thick of the action.
