20+ points “Outstanding aromatics lead the way and the palate is nothing short of spellbinding. The finish has epic freshness and the tannins are like nothing I have encountered before from the great Glaetzer portfolio. The Eye of Ra is all about power countered with impeccable restraint and I can still recall all of its flavours several weeks later. It is one of a number of wines that I have seen lately which signal a new and fascinating epoch for Barossa Shiraz. I followed this wine over three hours that evening and it never stopped evolving in the glass. This celestial wine made a huge impression on me and it is hard for me to see how this wine can be bettered and so I am overjoyed to give it a perfect score.” – Matthew Jukes

98 points “Glaetzer’s 2016 The Eye of Ra Shiraz boasts classy notes of pencil shavings and dark plummy fruit. From 85-year-old vines it’s full-bodied rich and creamy loaded with vanilla-tinged French oak but balanced by blueberries and blackberries and ending with lasting hints of mocha and liquorice. It returns Glaetzer’s traditional Barossa winemaking to a new level of quality and elegance without sacrificing power or guts.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Ben Glaetzer a winemaker with a legendary track record considers The Eye of Ra Shiraz 2016 the best wine he has ever made. Fine wine connoisseurs take note!

Ben Glaetzer has always aspired to make the perfect wine. In 2016 the vintage was so epic that he sensed it was the greatest opportunity of his career so far to do so. The Eye of Ra is a 100% Shiraz from Glaetzer’s finest parcels in Ebenezer a famed sub district of the Barossa Valley. Some of the low-yielding vines in these plots are 110 years old and the concentrated fruit they produced had a magic in 2016 that Glatzer had never tasted before. Matured in new French oak for 16 months The Eye of Ra 2016 is mesmerising stuff because it evolves so dramatically over the hours you sip it. Every time you return to the glass it’s completely different. Opening with raspberries blueberries and plums it then seamlessly morphs into cedar spice and wild herbs before twisting once more like the cobra on the label into inky blackberry black cherry and liquorice. Our final taste delivered cream vanilla and mocha but who knows where it would have gone next if we’d taken more time over it. We’d recommend clearing your diary for this wine and taking the evening over it. The rewards will be immeasurable.

The Egyptian culture was the first to plant a monoculture of grapes so it could make wine for the people. Ben Glaetzer therefore considers Egypt the birthplace of the wine industry as we now know it today hence the symbolism on many of his bottles. In ancient Egyptian mythology the Eye of Ra is the feminine counterpart to the sun god Ra. This powerful goddess protected Ra as well as gifting renewal in the form of the Nile floodwaters that restored fertility to Egypt. Although sometimes violent it seems that she kept everything in perfect balance for the 2016 vintage. So this wine honours her.

The Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 so know a thing or two about the area. They’ve carved their niche in the sub region of Ebenezer where – in their five star-rated winery (James Halliday’s Wine Companion) – they make what Matthew Jukes has called: “Silky textural and layered… extremely serious wines.”
