This unoaked white has it all going on. It’s made in one of the most remote parts of the Iberian peninsular by one of Portugal’s top winemakers Rui Roboredo Madeira. Beyra is the winery where Rui made his very first wines; he now runs six properties each of which raises the bar for Portuguese table wine a little higher. For the Reserva Quartz Branco old vines of rare native grape varieties – Fonte Cal and Síria – are grown up a mountain near the Spanish border on granite soils packed with silex which is famed for giving that smoke and gunflint note to wines in the Loire Valley. The crisp wine blows through the senses like a mountain breeze awakening everything with tangy lemon sorbet lime zest white blossom sea spray wildflower meadows rocks and smoke. Think lip-smacking Vinho Verde meets elegant Pouilly-Fumé on a hike through the rugged Alps.
