As well as that glowing review Bilancia’s La Collina Syrah 2019 was also ranked number five in the critic’s Top 100 Wines of New Zealand in 2021. Which is probably why it has completely sold out at the winery.
La Collina is one of New Zealand’s greatest Syrahs which probably isn’t surprising as Warren Gibson (New Zealand Winemaker of the Year 2007) is also the winemaker at Trinity Hill. The grapes are picked by hand from Bilancia’s top vines planted on a sunny plot above Gimblett Gravels. Syrah is co-fermented with Viognier skins from the same site to create that classic Côte-Rôtie combo. Matured elegantly in French oak for around 21 months it’s simply sensational and deserving of its cult following.
2019 was an exceptional year for Syrah here; the wines having both power and elegance. Expect a dense and plummy red with a wonderful fragrance peppery spice and sophisticated floral notes. It tastes so good that it’s difficult to imagine cellaring it even though that will only cause it to get better and better.
Bilancia is a boutique producer in Hawke’s Bay established by Lorraine Leheny and Warren Gibson in 1997. Although they settled in New Zealand this dynamic duo studied in South Australia and have made wines in Australia Hungary Italy California Portugal and France. They are both Libras which is why they choose the name Bilancia which means balance and is also the Italian word for the zodiac sign they were born under. However their stellar wines are a must-try irrespective of your star sign.
