19+ points “This is the first time that I have tasted this wine and it took my breath away… This is a remarkable creation.” – Matthew Jukes
Tiratore means hunter or marksman in Italian and this New Zealand Chardonnay is one you should be setting your sights on. It comes from a single vineyard in Hawke’s Bay called La Collina. When planting the vines in 2001 the team at Bilancia found that it was littered with spent bullets so it was either used as a firing range or was extremely popular with the local poachers. Either way this is a wine that hits the target.
The grapes were picked by hand before being pressed and naturally fermented in French oak. It remained in oak for 11 months before being bottled without fining making it vegan friendly and just as nature intended. Pouring a glass you’ll discover full-on fruit (peach grapefruit nectarine pear pineapple and melon) orchard blossom nougat buttery pastry vanilla spices flint sea salt and nutty notes of toasted hazelnuts almonds and cashews. We understand we’ve probably been a bit too prolix there but as Matthew Jukes says “the flavour is already electrifying.”
Bilancia is a boutique producer in Hawke’s Bay established by Lorraine Leheny and Warren Gibson in 1997. Although they settled in New Zealand this dynamic duo studied in South Australia and have made wines in Australia Hungary Italy California Portugal and France. They are both Libras which is why they choose the name Bilancia which means balance and is also the Italian word for the zodiac sign they were born under. However their stellar wines are a must-try irrespective of your star sign.
