98+ points, “Contemplative and exceedingly nuanced in personality, with wild berry, underbrush, ferrous earth and candied orange peel, this has everything to look forward to in terms of its future evolution in the bottle. It displays a pretty ruby colour that borders on garnet and polished copper. A silky, mid-weight palate is accented by beautifully managed and silky tannins (this aspect of the mouthfeel is extraordinary), bright freshness and long-lasting fruit momentum.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

97 points, “Seamless and bright… Understated complexity that will need time to bloom.” – James Suckling

97 points, “It’s amazing to experience such energy and purity from a young Biondi Santi Riserva… I worried that the extended aging for the Riserva might rob the wine of some of its fruit; instead it is the complete opposite, as this contains the depth and complexity of the best wines of the vintage. I can’t wait to see how the 2015 matures over the next several decades.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

2015 was in incredible year for Brunello di Montalcino, described by the experts at Vinous Media as “the vintage we’ve been waiting for” and by critic James Suckling as a “fairy-tale vintage” and “a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss”. The wines are vivid and suggest that they have huge potential longevity.

Biondi-Santi’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is only made in the very best vintages from vines that are at least 25 years old, but some are closer to being octogenarians. Aged in Slavonian oak casks for 36 months, this is a wine built to last. Biondi-Santi claim that it can mature for over 100 years, but who is going to put that to the test? The 2015 is a truly majestic wine. It’s an epiphany of concentrated wild cherry, blackberry, plum, suede, forest floor, Earl Grey tea, raspberry, spices, rose petal, lavender, blossom, orange peel, smoke, eucalyptus, rosemary, sage and tobacco. Very much one of those wines to try before you die.

A truly historic name of Montalcino, the Biondi-Santi family is one of the most revered winemaking dynasties in Italy. The Greppo vineyards have been in the family since 1800s. Currently supervising around 26 hectares of vines, the estate is renowned for its classic, ethereal and long-lived traditional style of Brunello. In fact, many people regard Biondi-Santi as being the inventors of Brunello di Montalcino as we know it today.

In 2016 the fabled estate sold the majority of its shares to EPI, Christopher Descours’ fashion-led luxury group that also owns Charles Heidsieck, Piper-Heidsieck, JM Weston, Alain Figaret and Bonpoint. Jacopo Biondi-Santi and his son Tancredi remain actively involved, but now with much more financial investment. Purest will however be collecting the older vintages.
