Masu cups were the square wooden boxes used to measure rice portions when it was used as currency in feudal Japan. To drink sake from one hold it diagonally by two opposing corners with one corner facing you. They are often deployed at celebrations where a small cup or glass is placed inside. Sake is then slowly poured into the smaller cup allowing it to overflow into the masu cup as a sign of the hosts respect appreciation generosity and hospitality. Alternatively masu cups can be stacked into a pyramid and filled by allowing the sake to overflow and cascade down in a fashion not dissimilar to building a Champagne tower.
This traditional Lacquered Wood Masu Sake Cup comes individually wrapped and gift boxed making a wonderful present or show piece for celebrations.
