This miniature of Black Tot Last Consignment British Royal Naval Rum is your opportunity to taste liquid history.

As you probably know Black Tot is a celebration of sailors being given a fortifying ration of rum each day – a tradition that spanned some 300 years. The British Royal Navy ended this daily ritual on 31 July 1970 – a dark day now known as Black Tot Day.

Traditional Royal Navy Rum was created in a most unusual manner. Rums were imported from all over the West Indies. These were married together in huge oak vats tucked away in warehouses in Deptford Gosport and Devonport. Those blends were then dispatched back around the world on ships where they were divvied out to sailors until a fateful day in 1970 when the practice halted. Those rums have an almost mythical status because the vats continually evolved for over 100 years being topped up with spirit from different distilleries many of which have long since ceased to exist. It was thought that the last of this complex spirit had been lost but the last of it was filled into wicker-clad stone flagons and forgotten about for 40 years. Untouched for over four decades these antique flagons were discovered and bottled as Black Tot Last Consignment. This is the last stocks of real Royal Navy Rum.

Last Consignment contains a little bit of everything. There’s pot and column still rums from a myriad of different distilleries. The components have been aged in all kinds of barrels some in their tropical homelands some in Europe some in both and some at sea. The result is an immensely complex tot. It pours a dark mahogany brew oozing treacle dark chocolate blackberry balsamic tamarind chutney walnut liqueur espresso bruised banana blackcurrant liquorice Muscovado sugar kirsch cigar and wood shavings. Don’t miss out on this never-to-be-repeated experience.
