This is the first ever Rye Whiskey to be legally distilled in Orange County California. Crafted using a mash bill of organic Californian rye wheat and barley Blinking Owl Rye Whiskey is matured in brand-new American charred white oak casks for two years. That might not sound long when compared to the likes of Scotch but all that hot Californian sunshine significantly accelerates the ageing process. So the result is far more mature than its age suggests as demonstrated by the fact that it was awarded a Gold Medal at The Spirit Business’ American Whiskey Masters 2020 in category of ‘Rye Whiskey aged up to 7 Years’. Spicy with notes of black pepper fresh baguette caramelised nuts porridge drizzled with golden syrup oat and raisin flapjack lemon oil mint and grilled peaches. Perfect for sipping neat or mixing into cocktails; those lemon and mint notes make for an exceptional Whiskey Smash.
Set up by a group of grain geeks who had heard rumours about a legendary mid-century bar in Santa Ana with a neon owl sign that blinked Blinking Owl became the first craft distillery in Orange County and the first distillery to open in the area since Prohibition. Inspired by the farm-to-table food movement local sourcing organic ingredients and sustainability they create 100% Californian vodka gin several kinds of whiskey and aquavit. Their Head Distiller Ryan Friesen began his career at Journeyman Distillery in Michigan but also completed internships at Black Swan Cooperage and Chichibu Distillery. The latter conducted under the watchful eye of none other than Ichiro Akuto is sure to pique the interest of aficionados and wise owls everywhere.
