Made in tiny quantities this is a magnificent Merlot. Aged for over a year in French oak barrels it has the elegance silkiness and assuredness of an Old World wine two or three times its price. Bodega Bouza’s Merlot is kept fresh by the breezes off the Atlantic imparting tangy raspberry violet and mineral notes and the rocky soils around Pan de Azúcar make the vines fight for survival creating admirable depth and concentration. Massively versatile this could be paired with anything from roasted beetroots to Sunday roast smoked duck to barbeques and cauliflower cheese to chicken livers. This is a future classic.

Keep an eye on Uruguay. This progressive entrepreneurial and environmentally friendly nation has a big wine drinking culture so much so that very little gets exported and the government actively protect the local industry from cheap imports from Chile and Argentina. So despite it being the fourth biggest wine producer in South America their wonderful bottles are very hard to come by.

Bodega Bouza was established towards the end of the 1990s by Juan and Elisa Bouza. Based at the foot of the Pan de Azúcar hill about 90km east of Uruguay’s capital Montevideo and just a stone’s throw from the sea. The Bouza’s have a large family all of them wine lovers and all them heavily involved in the business. They believe that working on a boutique scale results in better wine and you’d be hard pressed to argue with them when you taste the quality of their handpicked production. But don’t think that this is a quaint tumbledown farm. Bodega Bouza is a slick operation with a stunning bar and restaurant huge critical acclaim and medals to cobble dogs with. Automobile enthusiasts may also be interested in visiting Bodega Bouza as they might get a chance to taste the wines amongst the gleaming chrome and shiny paintwork of their classic car collection.
