Great value Spanish red for those who like their wines from off the beaten track…

Bodegas Frontonio was created by three friends: winemaker Fernando Mora MW (who made his first wine in his apartment’s bathtub) the sporty oenologist Mario López (who grew up in a winery) and international business lawyer Francisco Latasa (who looks after everything else). They named their winery after Saint Frontonio the Patron Saint of Épila. According to legend Frontonio was beheaded by the Romans and his head was thrown into the River Ebro near Zaragoza. However it was later found upstream on the bank of the River Jalón. Although quite a macabre story it’s strangely fitting for a project that is also going against the current. Valdejalón does not have a Denominación de Origen classification it is arguably the least well-known region in Aragón. These garage wines are therefore sold under the ‘Vino de la Tierra’ designation but are so much more than that classification suggests.

Botijo Rojo is a celebration of hand-harvest dry-farmed and organic Grenache. It was fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for ten months in cement tanks buried underground. What emerges has an intense fruit character think ripe pomegranate juicy cherries and big blackberries. But there’s also a little red apple freshness liquorice savouriness and black pepper spiciness. A super-summery unoaked red wine that punches well above its price point as the score of 90+ points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate proves.
