97 points “Bollinger’s 2007 R.D. is superb.” – Antonio Galloni

97 points “Bollinger's eagerly awaited 2007 Extra-Brut R. D. is beautiful… Full-bodied vibrant and incisive it's unusually elegant and structurally fine-boned for what is routinely one of Champagne's more muscular tête de cuvées… Long and penetrating this is a tightly coiled R. D. that will reward bottle age.” – Wine Advocate

With identical scores from two such respected critics this is an exciting new release from Bollinger and also something a little bit different. 2007 was a tough and dry year with rain just at the end of the growing season and an early harvest. So the resulting R.D. is far more refined than normal. And we love this new style; it’s like a breath of fresh air.

Most Champagne houses keep a small collection of old wines for their family friends and special guests. This is Bollinger’s and they’re inviting you into that circle of the chosen few to be able to taste it. Traditionally these wines were disgorged only a short time before drinking them when Madame Bollinger realised just how good they were she knew she had to share them and Bollinger R.D. – “Recently Disgorged” – was born. It set a precedent as the first Champagne to bear a disgorgement date.

This was handcrafted from a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay drawn from 14 crus (fewer than normal making this a more focussed wine) of which 91% were Grands Crus and the remainder were Premier Crus. Fermented entirely in oak and aged for 12.5 years before being disgorged and released Bollinger R.D. 2007 is a one-of-a-kind. Concentrated and wine-like there are lots of breakfast flavours like pain aux raisin orange zest lemon curd almond croissant and a drizzle of honey. But there’s also yellow apple ginger biscuits walnut baklava and a combo of juniper dried flowers and garden herbs that seem to add a gin and tonic-like refreshment. It’s just exquisite. We’d highly recommend grabbing an earlier vintage too and then trying the two side by side.

Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 by Jacques Bollinger and soon earned a reputation for quality. Under subsequent generations its reputation has gone from strength to strength and today it is one of the most prestigious of all Champagne brands. Stylistically Bollinger is renowned for its rich and savoury style of wines.
