97 points, “The 2017 Gigondas La Colline comes from a single parcel and is basically all Grenache that was 80% destemmed Coming from a tiny 1.5-hectare portion of clay and limestone soils and all old vine Grenache, the 2018 Gigondas La Colline is another gorgeous wine from this estate that strikes a balance between richness and elegance. More ruby-hued (these wines are never the deepest hued in Gigondas) and with a killer perfume of kirsch liqueur, framboise, herbes de Provence, chocolate, roasted herbs, and chalky minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a gorgeous, heady finish. This cuvée is almost always the more powerful and concentrated in the line-up, yet in 2018 it shows the more elegant, seamless style of the vintage beautifully. It’s going to benefit from a year or two of bottle age and drink fabulously well for a decade.” – Jeb Dunnuck
Considering the price, that is an immense score from one of the world’s most respected critics when it comes to the wines of the Rhône Valley. And it’s not a one-off, Jeb Dunnuck – who has called this estate “the Chambolle Musigny of the Rhône” – has awarded this incredibly consistent wine 97 points in every vintage from 2016 to 2019.
Domaine des Bosquets can trace its history in Gigondas back to 1376. Today, the old vines are tended by Julien Bréchet, and he’s working towards organic and biodynamic certification. Keen to keep the freshness, he picks earlier and uses less oak than many of his neighbours. He produces a pair of single-vineyard wines: Le Lieu Dit and La Colline. The latter is the richer and more robust of the two, renowned for its gloriously velvet-like texture. Expect aromas of plush red fruit, followed by hedonistic cherry chocolate liqueurs, bramble, plum, raspberry, Negroni, blackcurrant, lavender, bay leaf and sweet exotic spices. A fine choice for a Sunday roast or a slow-cooked tagine; this is a wine that is not to be missed.
